Chemical Safety News: OSHA set the date June 15, 2010 for the implementation of the rule that requires employers to notify employees ALL hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), exposure, which can increase the risk of lung cancer and damage to the nose, throat, and respiratory tract. Previously, employers were only required to notify employees when exposures exceeded the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Exposure to hexavalent chromium can occur when 1) using pigments, spray paints, and coatings that contain chromates, 2) operating chrome plating baths, and 3) welding or cutting metals that contain chromium, such as stainless steel.
